Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn. Wholesale Air Max 97 .ca. Hi Kerry, In the Boston-Buffalo game on Wednesday night in the second period, Sabres defenceman Tyler Myers slashes Bruins forward Brad Marchand and then punches him in the head! How and why does Marchand get the penalty, with no call on Myers? He then scores a go-ahead goal! My question would be - does a supervising official between periods give the refs the talking down a player would get from his coach? This call could cost a team two points on very questionable officiating! Thanks,Ken MacAskill Ken: Both you and broadcast analyst Joe Micheletti made the correct call on this play. At the very least the Bruins and Sabres should have been playing four men aside as a result of the altercation between Tyler Myers and Brad Marchand. In a perfect world, Myers deserved an extra minor penalty as the aggressor in this incident following his slash and punch at Marchand. You asked how and why, only Brad Marchand received the penalty on this play. The trailing referee is responsible for all players behind the Sabres blue line. As the Sabres went on the attack from their end zone, Marchand cut across the ice toward his bench for a line change and in doing so skated directly in front of Myers. The altercation began when Marchand dropped his hip toward Myers who responded with a cross-check shove, a slash by each player and then the Myers punch. At this point play was stopped to assess a penalty. The camera picked up the trailing referee with his arm raised and approaching the two players on an angle back from the neutral zone toward Tyler Myers and Brad Marchand. From the referees angle of return it is apparent to me that he had vacated the Sabres end zone prior to players clearing that zone and failed to recognize and observe the hot spot between Marchand and Myers. I dont believe the ref saw the start of the altercation but picked it up when Brad Marchand jammed his stick into Myers midsection. He therefore deemed Marchand to be the instigator of the scrum. The easy call should have been to penalize both players for their actions. Unfortunately that didnt take place and resulted in a Tyler Myers power-play goal. Officiating managers (supervisors) very seldom enter the officials room between periods unless something extremely serious has gone afoul. Instead, the manager will review his observations and game report with the officials at the conclusion of the game. In certain cases, depending upon travel schedules or a perceived need, a follow-up telephone call or even breakfast meeting might take place with an official. Typically though any instruction/coaching will take place in the officials dressing room after the game. There was a time when supervisors entered the room between periods but team management objected to this practice when they felt the officials approach to the game changed to drastically following between period instructions. I dont agree with this practice in principle, but whenever the conversation does take place the supervisors proper approach and coaching techniques are vital in advancing the officials learning curve. When I observe a Division I College game for my former colleague and referee-in-chief of the ECAC Paul Stewart, I always visit the officials room between periods; if for no other reason but to be supportive and available should they have any questions. My approach is always to be positive and point out the good things they did but also to make them aware of any potential hot spots that might develop in addition to any positioning issues I feel the need to address. The game can certainly look different from the press box or the television monitor than it does at ice level. In a flash from the past, when I first signed a contract with the NHL there was a different and much more aggressive approach taken by the supervisors of that day which could be very intimidating for an official; especially a young one. Team general managers were not fined for approaching the officials room and shouting matches often took place in the hall outside the refs room. Supervisors were subjected to angry rants from team personnel in the press box which could result in a between period visit to the officials room by a supervisor. I can tell you there were trash cans kicked around the officials room and rolled up programs thrown at the wall in some of these "coaching" sessions. As you can imagine they werent very productive from a teaching perspective but could have a profound effect on how the next period was officiated! In todays fast paced game the two referee two linesman system is mandatory. An influx of younger officials has been hired to the staff when the veterans retire. Enhanced coaching and mentoring techniques are required to quicken the learning curve that takes place in addition to holding all the officials accountable to the expected standard. Louis still looking for a way out of Tampa Bay, the 38-year-old NHL veteran isnt showing his cards.INDIANAPOLIS - Ryan Grigson is putting the ball squarely in the NFLs court. The Colts general manager has gone silent on the hottest topic in the NFL ahead of next weeks Super Bowl: whether the New England Patriots intentionally deflated footballs in Sundays 45-7 victory over Indianapolis that gave them the AFC championship and a trip to Arizona to face Seattle.Everything, Im sure is going to come out in the investigation, guys. Like I said, its not appropriate for me to talk about. I cant do that, Grigson said Friday when asked if the Colts notified the league about a potential deflation problem. Its in the leagues hands. Im sorry.Grigson spoke shortly before the NFL said that evidence shows the Patriots used underinflated footballs during the first half of the game. The league said it wants to find out whether deliberate action was to blame, but provided no timetable for doing so.Underinflated balls in theory could provide an advantage because they would be easier to throw and catch. Under league rules, each team provides balls for use on offence. The balls used by the Patriots were properly inflated for the second half and remained properly inflated after the game, the NFL said. There have been various reports as to how league officials became aware of the situation and whether Indianapolis tipped them off. Nobody in the Colts organization has confirmed those details.Last week, Indianapolis coach Chuck Pagano said he had spoken to the Ravens staff and NFL officiating chief Dean Blandino about the unusual formation New England used during a divisional-round win over Baltimore. Pagano had worked on John Harbaughs staff in Baltimore before taking the Colts job early in 2012.On Monday, Pagano also acknowledged he had spoken with the refs before kickoff against New England, though he did not say whether the air pressure in the footballs came up during the discussion.New England coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady have said they didnt know what happened and that they were waiting for the league to complete its investigation. Apparently, so is everyone else.Colts linebackeer DQwell Jackson told reporters Thursday at the Pro Bowl that he gave the ball he intercepted to an equipment manager and that he noticed no difference than other game balls. Nike Air Max 97 China Wholesale. . Jackson said he still hasnt gotten the ball back. And Grigson wanted nothing to do with the story. Before we get started, let me cut you off at the pass. Its obviously, like Ive told all you guys, its in the leagues hands, he said as he began the annual post-season news conference. Thats where were at right now.Grigson did shed some light on other topics, though. He confirmed that running back Trent Richardson, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, had been suspended two games for personal reasons. Richardson was inactive for the divisional-round win at Denver and last weekends loss against the Patriots. Grigson did not provide further details. As for possible retirements, Grigson said the Colts are not pushing receiver Reggie Wayne or defensive end Cory Redding to make quick decisions and suggested both could still be valuable players next season if they come back.Grigson also said that while the Colts do intend to offer a new contract to Andrew Luck, re-signing the Pro Bowl quarterback is not the top priority this off-season. Lucks original deal runs through 2015, and its a foregone conclusion that the Colts will exercise the fifth-year option to keep him in Indy through at least 2016.So what is Indys biggest off-season priority?Finding a way to get past their biggest nemesis, the Patriots. New England has not only beaten Luck four straight times and eliminated the Colts each of the past two seasons, theyve also rushed for 657 yards and 13 touchdowns in the last three games.I think the (Chicago) Bulls were at that point one time before they started their run. You know, they had to learn to beat the Pistons, the Bad Boys, Grigson said. I think thats where were at. I think we have to figure out, be able to pinpoint those areas because sometimes its not just what you think. Its more than meets the eye.___Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/ap_nfl Cheap Throwback Baseball Detroit Tigers Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball Colorado Rockies Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball Houston Astros Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball Kansas City Royals Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball Los Angeles Angels Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball Los Angeles Dodgers Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball Miami Marlins Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball Milwaukee Brewers Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball Minnesota Twins Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball New York Mets Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball New York Yankees Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball Oakland Athletics Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball Philadelphia Phillies Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball Pittsburgh Pirates Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball San Diego Padres Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball San Francisco Giants Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball Seattle Mariners Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball St. Louis Cardinals Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball Tampa Bay Rays Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball Texas Rangers Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball Toronto Blue Jays Jerseys Cheap Throwback Baseball Washington Nationals Jerseys ' ' ' |
